Closet Makeover Reveal

My daughter’s closet had an extremely funky set up when we moved in. Instead of the bar running the length of the closet horizontally there were four small bars on the inside that ran horizontally if that makes sense. In the simplest of terms it was the absolute worst use of space, not to mention they left a raggedy built in drawer system that had to go.

This was the space looking straight into the closet. No bar, there were a few coat hooks there but I had already removed them before taking the photo….and sorry for the cell phone photos but I was in the mood to get it done so these were what I captured.

The inside walls were filthy and dinged up pretty bad. I just couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t give the inside a spackle and  paint job. I had wall paint leftover so I used that. My husband didn’t understand because no one would see but I would know and that was enough for me to climb myself into that hot cramped space and paint. Thank goodness for low VOC paint.

After the paint dried I installed a metal tension rod designed for closet use that I picked up from Home Depot along with two closet rod brackets. I screwed the brackets into the studs and inserted the rod which I also screwed into the wall on each end to secure.

Years ago I purchased a $1 shelf from Ikea clearance that had just been laying around waiting to be put to good use. I affixed it to the top of the brackets and voila.

The baskets were gifted to me when Addison was born. They currently house hats, scarves and other accessories. The labels came from the dollar spot at Target.

I spray painted the hangers and the shoe rack gold. I purchased both from Walmart.

I did leave one of the inside shelves intact to house hair bows and little knick knacks. The closet doesn’t currently have a light so I put this lamp in here that only I am allowed to turn on and off. I really only use it in the evening when picking out her clothes.

All of her hairbow/headband storage is from Dollar Tree. The headbands are just stuck into a mason jar.  {I’ve since redone how I store her hair bows. See how I make use of Dollar Tree baskets to organizer her hair bows in one of her dresser drawers here }

To help her get herself ready in the mornings, I attached a command hook to the door where I put her clothes nightly and after breakfast she knows to go there to get her clothes for the day and put them on.

Fall Home Sneak Peek with American Home by Yankee Candle Brand

Fall, glorious fall is on the horizon. I am currently pulling out my décor from last year and mixing those pieces in with new things. Although the official first day of fall isn’t for a few more weeks, I am slowly putting things in place in hopes that on the 23rd, the official first day of autumn I can reveal my fall home tour post. On a recent trip to Walmart I picked up a few items including a few new candles from the American Home™ by Yankee Candle® collection.

Fall and winter are two seasons where I am a little weird about making sure my house is cozy, and for me that includes the way it smells. Keeping in mind that some people have allergies etc. I try to keep the fragrances I choose light and seasonal. I decided to go with the Fresh Apple, Sunny Sands, and  Fall Harvest candles. I found these items at the very front of the store as well as on the home and candle aisle.

There were a variety of cost friendly price options for the candles with the highest price coming in at $14.93 for the 19 oz Large round and apothecary jar options. The 12 oz candles also come in round and apothecary jar options priced at $10.93. The 4oz. tumbler candles, 2.6oz fragrance beads and 1.75 oz votive candles are priced $4.93, $3.43 and $1.43 respectively. For a listing of the American Home™ by Yankee Candle® collection visit here.

These candles are constructed of premium grade paraffin wax and contain lead free wicks for a clean, healthy burn. Also be mindful of children when placing candles. Be sure to keep them out of the reach of children and animals.

To keep with the color theme of the kitchen I used a little painters tape and paint to decorate the Fresh Apple candle for the kitchen.

I have tried to refrain from lighting them until the official first day of fall because I’m a little awkward like that. These American Home™ by Yankee Candle® collection are not just getting my house smelling right for the season but are serving as decor as well.

Boys Room Design Inspiration + Before Photos

I’m going to be completely honest and say that I really don’t find much joy in dressing or decorating for boys/men. The pickings are usually slim and lack a ton of the WOW factor that comes with girls/women items. I’ve been putting my son’s room off long enough, I mean I even started taping and prepping his room for painting in OCTOBER and stopped to start and fully complete my daughter’s room. I know. Bad mommy

Now that my daughter’s room is 90% done, I’m moving on to my son’s room and he can’t be more excited. I plan to have it completed before school starts which is in just over a month. We’ve had the paint since OCTOBER, I even have his bedding and a few decor items so my timeline isn’t too ridiculous considering.

Here are the paint colors we chose…I am thinking about changing the blue to a deeper navy. We’ll see.

Colors are Behr Dolphin Fin and Star Spangled

Since he is likely not to get his room changed again for a few years, at 9 I think he should have some input so I’ve run some things by him and we are on target to do an “Industrial Prep” look for his room complete with a DIY built in over his bed and shelving to hold his awards and books.

Here a few of the inspiration photos him and I have agreed on that will be recreated somehow in the space.

A. {Source} I love chalkboard walls. Thinking about putting behind his door and adding hooks for his hats and bookbag.

B. {Source} Definitely have my eye on a locker night stand. This color scheme is delightful.

Kind of excited to DIY something similar. Not sure where it will go yet but I like the look, and its functional for displaying his awards and trophies.

Not sure yet if I will do something like this or frame all of his first sports jerseys. Leaning toward the latter but I love the look of this so it may end up getting recreated somewhere else in the house.

NOW: Here is what I am currently working with.

I have grand plans for this little niche. I thought about planking it but will likely frame out the chalkboard like the above inspiration photo on a smaller scale and add some hooks at the bottom to hang things.

Not sure what the kid who lived in this room prior to us moving in was doing but there are so many dents and holes in the wall. I’ve managed to spackle and sand all of them. I have to do another skim coat over a few because they aren’t as smooth as I would like.

There used to be a TV hanging from the ceiling and the long line in the crease of the wall had a thing over it that covered the wires and when we removed it, it took off some of the dry wall. That probably won’t be the smoothest but I’ve gotten it real close. I plan on putting a chair and reading lamp there to disguise it.

IMG_3052

Been looking on Craigslist for a long dresser to go here. I think this wall would be perfect. His framed jerseys will likely go above here.

My baby will finally get a new Queen mattress. He’s been rocking with this twin since he was 3. It is time!

Work starts Saturday morning. Be sure to follow me on Instagram for sneak peeks!

Addison’s Colorful Girls Room Decor

People say you are never finished decorating a space and now I firmly believe that. I have come to realize that you merely get to a point where you are satisfied with the necessities and will often switch things around as the seasons change or as the mood moves you.

I wanted the space to be a colorful big girls room that she can continue to grow into.

I’ve finally reached that place of semi peace with Addison’s room. She has all of the basics: a bed, curtains, wall hangings, bedding and storage. I’m still looking to add a decorative storage bench to the bottom of her bed for toy storage and have plans in the next few months to make a gallery wall of all of her artwork on the wall across from her bed. Her closet needs to be redesigned as well, but I can put those things on the back burner for now and move my efforts onto getting my son’s room together.

Here are some updated shots of the changes I’ve made to her room.

Found this cute hanging sign at Hobby Lobby. With my 40% coupon I was able to snag it for a little over $3

I made that hanging wreath with nearly 1800 gold thumbtacks. Tutorial coming later in the week. Everything else came from Hobby Lobby.

This footstool was my Mother’s. I try to incorporate her pieces as often as possible into our home. A great way to remember her.

Implementing effective storage hasn’t been going to well. I’m looking forward to finding something that will keep her toys hidden for the most part. For now these little baskets work….5% of the time.
