Savor Your Mornings with Shauna Niequist

It’s the slow start to a Saturday morning over here. I love mornings that are able to unfold as they desire with no rush or immediate needs. It is these mornings that I am able to start my day with a little devotion, and coffee and the time to be with my feelings and thoughts.

Unfortunately every morning can’t be the same and while my devotion happens every morning, sadly its often hurried or rushed because I haven’t quite  mastered the go to bed early, don’t hit the snooze button, get up early process that allows me a good portion of quiet, me time before the beginning of busy days. I’ll get there one day.

I love devotionals and one of my favorite collection of devotional short stories is Cold Tangerines by Shauna Niequist so I was really happy to get the opportunity to receive an advanced copy of her new book “Savor – Living Abundantly Where You Are, As You Are ” that is now currently in stores.

This devotional is almost like Shauna gets what its like to be a busy woman on the go who needs tidbits of spiritual goodness that she can reflect back on throughout the day. These daily devotions are written from a personal place and are based on her real life experiences. You won’t  get the expert speaking at you vibe telling you what to do but instead you get a sense that you are reading something by someone who has walked in your shoes and sharing with you some tidbits on how they got through.

What I want to do is savor this life- my life, my children, my community, this gorgeous world God created…That’s what I want, and so often I miss it. I lay in the bed at night frustrated with myself that I allowed the minor annoyances of life to obscure the rich melody underneath it….I’m trying to get out of my head. And I’m trying to get right down into the raw soil of my own life. Because it’s happening whether I decide to notice or not -Shauna Niequist

The above quote is a few of the tidbits that I took from the introduction of the book that spoke to me.

Another amazing touch to this book is on various pages all outlined in the Table of Contents, she includes yummy recipes, thus the title “Savor” Y’all know I love a good recipe so I plan to go through each one and share with you as I move along and come to them.

This book rests on my nightstand, and I have read forward giving no never mind to the date but just wanting to read more. Whether you choose to use this as a daily devotion or a novel you will get something amazing from it.

I love devotionals. I have one that I do with the kids and we start everyday with family prayer. We’ve all been a lot more grounded and peaceful in the mornings this year since implementing these changes.
