Girls Trip to Cherokee North Carolina + Video

My bestie is getting married. I could go into a blog series about all of the levels of happiness I have for her and her new married life but I’m pretty sure if you aren’t part of the clique it just won’t have the same effect. Instead I’ll just share with you the epic amount of fun we had during our small little girls trip to Cherokee, North Carolina.

Cherokee North Carolina

Before we got too far out of the city we stopped at Publix to gather our vittles for the weekend.

Let’s get into how we got all the way  within stone’s reach of the cabin before we got lost and let’s just say there was a washed out road and barking dogs and a person in a house coat yelling , “Can I help you,” and all of the things women should be afraid on the top of a mountain.

Cherokee North Carolina

Y’ALL.

After we fished ourselves out of that mess and back to the paved road, the weekend fun officially began. The cabin was pretty dope in a mountainy, country kind of way.

The animal decor did give me the creeps a little bit.

Was pretty sure this was the Wells Fargo train

The wrap around porches gave tons of serenity. We couldn’t have chosen a better weekend for sitting out. The temps were in the high 60’s.

Busy lives we all lead so no real plans were set, we just wanted to eat, have a few drinks and a ton of laughs and that’s just what we did.

So you already know the turn “in” was earlier than in our younger days. Sleep soon came and the morning welcomed a community cooked breakfast and mimosas and laughs and talks about retirement plans, and taxes and kids and husbands and you know grown woman ish.

We got ourselves together and headed down to the Harrah’s Casino for a little gambling. This was my very first time playing slots. I’ve been to Vegas but never played.  Pretty sure everyone was annoyed with all of the questions I was asking. After I finally wrapped my head around how everything worked, armed with my lone $20 I set in…..to lose $18.

My misfortune was all by itself. Everyone else came up on a few hundred dollars. The casino was very nice minus the smell of smoke, I walked out with the worst headache and a head full of hair that reeked of the home of a chain smoker. Was glad to get out of there with my $2 tucked away for safe keeping.

Post Harrah’s we scurried back to the cabin, cause again…..mountain road, dark, no street lights…….

The grill and firepit was lit, and we settled in for another fun evening of girl talk and reminiscing on our younger years.

I don’t do hot tubs, so I was on boogey man watch.

Overall, the weekend was amazing, and for your viewing pleasure I summed up our weekend into a fun little 5 minute video. Be sure to like me on Youtube!

Enjoy!

When was the last time you snuck away with your girls for a few shenanigans?

Bye January. Hello February

Tossed out with the Christmas tree is the mild version of how January has left me feeling.

Business was off.

Financially trying to rebound from hosting Thanksgiving and Christmas was completely shaded when my car that just missed warranty mileage decided to break down and needed a VERY costly repair. Oh, about that emergency fund *rolls eyes*

Our garage door is broken and instead of just getting it fixed we decided we would get a new door then incident above happened. Operation garage door is off until further notice.

The hatred some of this country is proud of spewing and standing behind has been too much. TOO. MUCH

I’ve just been struggling to make sense of it all and keep going. My mind has been swirling at hundreds of miles an hour trying to figure out how to process some things to include analyzing a level of petty to get back at someone who came for me. I’m still in deliberation on whether I’m going to let it roll or execute a plan. I’ll keep you posted.

Despite all of the awful there was some good.

My Dad will be here for good on February 2. Las Vegas is a long way from Georgia, and we are so happy that we will get to see him more. He’s just 10 miles down the road now.

I spent a wonderful weekend in the North Carolina mountains celebrating my bestie that is getting married in a few weeks.

Despite all that is going on, health and a pure love of life allowed me to get through January without completely melting into the floor in a puddle of my own tears. This one was rough, but I’m still standing and ready for February with high expectations of great things!

Here’s to February!

5 Places to Visit that Highlight African American History

Black History Month is upon us. To be totally honest and quite frank I’m just floored at all of the racial divide that has reared its ugly head lately and the white washing of minority contributions to the world. My thoughts on the issue are all over the place, so much so that I am unable to craft something poignant about how I’m feeling about all of this.

What I can do as a parent is put more effort into making sure my children are well educated on African American history and its contributions to society outside of the mere mentions and omissions in their textbooks. One option I will be taking advantage of is Mamademics’ Black History is American History monthly curriculum,  that comes with a 10-15 page pdf download that includes a vocabulary list, reading lists, 3-4 activities, and a parental guidance section. We’ll be starting that soon.

Another avenue for educating my babies is going to be through traveling to significant locations throughout the U.S. that tell stories of African Americans throughout history and the events that have transpired throughout history.

The following 5 locations are just the beginning of a long list of locations throughout the US where you can see African American History in a tangible way.

The Museum of African American History – Boston and Nantucket

Museum of African American History

As quoted from their website at www.maah.org , ” The Museum of African American History is dedicated to preserving, conserving and accurately interpreting the contributions of African Americans in New England from the colonial period through the 19th century.”

National Underground Railroad Freedom Center – Cincinnati

This museum is located on the banks of the Ohio river and looks at the era of history starting with the Underground Railroad. With nearly 100,000 visitors annually, they hope to spread their mission of encouraging and inspiring everyone to take a part in the ongoing struggles for freedom. I can get behind that! Find out more information on their website at www.freedomcenter.org

Birmingham Civil Rights Institute – Birmingham

The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is now a part of the Birmingham Civil Rights Monument. In the area of the museum there are quite a few other civil rights venues that collectively make up the monument. A visit to the institute will put you in close proximity to other venues to include the 16th St. Baptist Church. For more information visit their website at www.BCRI.org

Center for Civil and Human Rights – Atlanta

Smithsonian’s newest museum located in Washington D.C. has gotten rave reviews for it’s depiction of history from slavery until the Civil Rights Movement. Be sure to visit the website to get information on how to obtain tickets.

The Eyecandy Project 52 | 2/52

I’m late getting my Eyecandy Project 52 post up and for good reason. This week, er last week’s submission prompt was “From Above” and because I knew I would be taking a trip to the mountains with my girls I figured I would wait to snap a photo from the cabin.

As much as I would love to be able to sleep in on the weekends, I simply can’t. Okay, let me be a whole lot honest, I didn’t sleep soundly that night. I mean a houseful of women on a mountain, in a cabin not in earshot of another cabin. I like to think I was the lookout while everyone else slept.

Seeing as how I was startled awake at every sound of the ice maker or someone’s cough, catching the early morning sunrise wasn’t all that hard. I stepped out on the porch to take in the beautiful colors on that unseasonably warm Winter morning. It was so peaceful and this picture did the view no justice. It was absolutely beautiful.

Next week I’ll be back with an in depth post and vlog on our girls trip!
