Something about the fall and the holidays makes me want to bake and craft and just do all of the things that I normally don’t do. The kids love this time of year because they love to help in the kitchen and there seems to be enough projects during this season to keep them busy and in my way.
Werther’s sent over some of their new baking caramels and I thought the kids and I would make some caramel apples. They were determined to do the majority of the work on their own so I just stood and ordered and supervised the process.
We first gathered some Granny Smith apples. I’m sure you can use any kind but like I’ve said before I have NO love for mushy apples so the crispness and the tartness of the Granny Smith variety seemed to be best.
Next my son washed the apples and we…I mean I stuck the sticks into the apples
While I was struggling to get the sticks in the apples I had the children unwrap an entire package of Werther’s baking caramels
Once that task was completed I added 2 tablespoons of milk to the unwrapped caramels and placed the bowl in the microwave for 2 minutes constantly stirring.
Once the caramel was melted it was time to cover the apples. The children really insisted on doing this part on their own so I stood back and let them have at it.
The entire recipe that I used can be found on the back of the bag of Werther’s Baking Caramels. Once melted the mixture was very easy to work with for a short time before it started to cool and get sticky. The children were able to successfully coat 3 on their own and I got caught with the caramel as it started to get sticky. Trust me when I say work quickly lest your apple end up looking like the far right one which just happened to be the one I did!
Don’t you just love a good caramel apple. These things were so good, like very good.
Have you made caramel apple or any other seasonal sweet this season? Do you plan on it?

November 15, 2013 at 12:20 pmHow fun – I’ve never tried making caramel apples at home but I like eating them (sprinkled with nuts!). About the mushy apples . . .that’s a constant debate in my house. I like softer apples but my husband hates “snow apples” as he calls them. The hard crunchy varieties hurt so much to bite into!

November 17, 2013 at 4:04 pmI’ve never made candy apples with caramel before but this sounds/looks delicious! I bet they tasted even better. The kind that I’ve tasted were washington red apples with some type of red candy. I hated them, but these look amazing! Good job!
