A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to visit a local Sleep Number store in my area to try out some of the mattresses and do the assessment to figure out my personal sleep number. I have never seen so many mattresses in my life! From single mattresses to queen mattresses, I just couldn’t wait to try them out!!
I went into the experience knowing very little about the products except that the bed came with two remotes and it seemed like something that was pretty neat to play with. I had an idea that the cost was probably something that was out of my price range and as a result I never went in the store until I was presented with this review opportunity.
My first impression of the store was that I was utterly surprised that they sold more than just beds. There were sheets, comforters, pillows, and customizable headboards. I was sent a Coolfit Foam Pillow in exchange for my review and it is like the pillow of all pillows. We have dubbed it the “cloud” around here because that’s what it feels like. We fight over it and whoever falls asleep first is likely to get jacked of it. There was also state of the art bed linens that can detect when your body is hot and will draw the heat away to make sure you sleep comfortable. Just a whole bunch of bed linen awesomeness to be had.
I finally ventured to the back and laid on a mattress where the employee set the number as high as it would go and then she began lowering the numbers and asked me to tell her when I felt uncomfortable. From that point she raised it back up to the point where I felt most comfortable. That number was 40, my sleep number.
In addition she pulled up this state of the art analysis of the pressure zones in my body on a screen at the end of the bed that reminded me of plexiglass. I was able to see where my pressure zones where and how they turned from red to blue as she lowered me back down into my sleep number.
For lack of better words when I was laying at my sleep number it felt like I was being cuddled. If you’ve ever felt memory foam, just imagine being hugged by a memory foam man. I didn’t realize how much you really feel your pressure points when you lay on a regular mattress until I laid on the M9. I just wished they would loan me one for like a week so I could get the entire experience.
My store experience would’ve been a total WOW if I didn’t have to keep peeking up to make sure my children weren’t tearing up the store. I digress
After my analysis was complete a print out of the mattress type, costs and additional options were provided to me. Yep, my jaw dropped but keeping in mind that we wouldn’t have to purchase another mattress for 20 years we have decided to purchase one when we get ready to move.
Yes, the pricing is a bit more than what you would pay for an average mattress but the value is definitely there. The average mattress lasts about 7 years, you won’t have to replace this one for nearly 20. There are different price points and mattresses some more affordable than others but the investment in my eyes would be totally worth it. Before I bought a mattress, I read some articles like this one to make sure I was getting a good quality mattress.
If you do nothing but take a trip into the store and take a look around I think you will be surprised…just don’t take your kids *side eye*

December 2, 2012 at 10:07 pmI’ve been looking into to getting a sleep number bed. Our current mattress is not comfortable for me at all. I prefer my mattresses firm, while the Mr prefers softer ones. A sleep number bed is the perfect solution for us. Putting this on my birthday wishlist for next year!

December 3, 2012 at 12:05 am*Hollering* at hugged by a memory foam man! I am desperate for a new bed. Like, thirsty as all hell. I want to buy one when we move, but it will have to wait for a little while. I’m sure the price point was astronomical, but we spend a HUGE portion of our lives asleep…so I look at it as an investment.

December 3, 2012 at 12:16 amActually the pricing wasn’t as bad as I thought. I told the lady I wanted a new car and the payments on that would mean my car would have to wait. Her response was, who cares how nice your car is when you haven’t slept well. Ma’am you have a point!!

December 3, 2012 at 12:18 amYep, that will always be their greatest selling point! Americans are a sleep deprived nation! A good night’s rest is super important.

December 3, 2012 at 12:36 pmI always walk by the store in the mall and stare at the folks laying in the beds and playing with the remotes! Ha! I’d love to go in and if nothing else find out what my sleep number is and dream about getting one because Hubs thinks our mattress is just fine! #frugalman!!

December 3, 2012 at 1:19 pmMy bestie bought one last summer I will give you the amount so no one is disillusioned with the price point. She finances $3600 on that bed and that wasn’t the most expensive bed. She had a horrible old woman back to be 31 yrs old so she needed something that would help with that. She really does like it and says its money well spent. My parents also have a sleep number bed that they’ve had for at least 6years now that they love too. I’m good with my mattress.

December 3, 2012 at 3:31 pmI’m going to try this out in store. If I like it then the next bed I purchase will be a sleep number. I definitely believe it is worth the investment to get a good night’s sleep!

December 5, 2012 at 9:41 amAfter a similar experience, I did a little research and found out there are other brands that offer the same experience, but at a lot lower price than Sleep number. I wound up buying a Dream Number bed online and could not be happier.

December 7, 2012 at 2:03 amYou’re so lucky to have the chance to review it. I guess it was a choice well made too because the whole experience will be worth it. It is better to buy something quite expensive that you can rest well instead of something cheap but can give you back pains.
