Happy New Year X Unlikely Martha in 2017

Happy New Year virtual friends.  This is the 6th time I’ve had the pleasure of creating a Happy New Year post and each year I  have grown tremendously from the previous year. As we welcome 2017 this year is no different than it’s predecessors, growth is an amazingly, incredible thang.

Despite a tremendous amount of unrest in the world during 2016, I found myself in a way I’ve been dreaming about for many years. Like on a MAMA I MADE IT type vibe. I pushed myself personally and professionally in a way I knew existed in me but had been too afraid to act on. One day I woke up and decided I didn’t want to be afraid anymore and went for it and I haven’t looked back. I am so incredibly excited to see what happens in 2017.

So, what does 2017 look like for Unlikely Martha? Glad you asked.

I’ve been blogging for quite some time and I admit to having lost my own voice in the feeling of having to keep up and stay relevant. Well 2016 taught me that I’m no longer concerned with that. As I perused old blog posts over the past few weeks, I’ve come across pictures of my children as babies, the stress and tears I’ve shed during major life changes we’ve experienced over the last  six years and I’ve been reminded of why I do this. I’ve managed to subconsciously document our life journey and if I never get another click or like having these things documented is worth more than anything.

2017 will be a return to documenting my life in a way that is useful to you. I will be 38 in a few weeks, at this stage in my life I’m always looking for new books to read, stores to shop at, ways to simplify my life, to find balance, and create a warm and inviting home for my family.  Not to be outdone with the practical, lipstick shades, the best fitting skinny jeans and local places with the best margaritas and appropriate methods of “turning up” for this point in my life are still priority.

In 2017 Unlikely Martha will be

  • A place for you to find new recipes and meal plans
  • A place for you to get fashion, home and beauty inspiration
  • A place where I will return to my love of photography sharing my journey with a photo project
  • A place where I continue to open up and be vulnerable sharing my wins and losses in life and business
  • A place where keeping up with the Jones’ will never trump my desire to stay real and relevant in my own way
  • A place to remind you it is important to get in face to face time with your homies and those you love. A good party is always in order
  • A place where I hope to inspire  you to “keep house and stay fly” whatever that looks like to you and your life

I don’t want to be goals. I want to inspire you to live your best life on YOUR terms. My greatest desire is for you to take my content and figure out ways to make it work for you. WE are all just trying to figure this out day by day, step by step. No perfect Instagram feeds here, I’m dedicated to sharing my reality in 2017.

Yes, there will be relevant sponsored content. I have bills to pay as you do, however it is my goal to only bring relevant sponsored content to this space. As I embrace video more in a strategic manner be prepared to see my face and video content more as I expand my reach onto Youtube and other video outlets. A dedicated FB group is also in the works where my vision is to have women support one another in parenting, entrepreneurship and life in general so stay tuned for info on that.

I am so tremendously thankful for all of you that continue to come here and interact with me on my social channels. I only have one ask of you in 2017, If I create a piece of content that resonates with you would you please take a minute to hit the share button. I would love to see this space grow in 2017 as I create useful content. I will love you forever!

Again, thank you so much for your support over the years. I am tremendously grateful.

Christmas Food

White Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Cookies

I’ve been sick. Like under the bed sick, open one eye in the morning to assess whether I feel like myself before pulling the cover back over my head 3 days in a row type of sick.

SICK.

Yesterday, I managed to salvage a part of my normal existence and baked some cookies with the babies. Poor things have been trapped in the house since Monday being my nurses. I grocery shopped this weekend and purchased some bananas that needed to be used so I thought I’d try banana bread cookies for my contribution to the tasty #HousefulofCookies blog hop happening over at Houseful of Nicholes.

The cookies surprisingly came out very well. The consistency was very much that of banana bread but in cookie form.

I was feeling adventurous so tossed in a cup of white chocolate morsels that I had on hand.

Holiday Card Options that Fit Your Family Needs

Thank you to Minted for partnering with Unlikely Martha for this post.

In a semi perfect world I would always act on my intentions but there are times when things get too busy to make those things happen in a timely manner.

During Thanksgiving I had every intention to set my tripod up and take a family photo while my stepdaughter was here. Unfortunately the hustle and bustle of visitors and the fact that time seemed to fly by we weren’t able to capture a photo that I could use on our Christmas cards.

I refuse to send out holiday cards with a picture on them unless our full family is in the picture. This year I am having to resort to a non photo Christmas/Happy New Year card. Minted offers some amazing options for non photo cards.

Too many great options. So much so, I had such a hard time deciding what to go with. The beauty of Minted’s  non photo cards is you can personalize them by choosing to add your name(s), font, and colors.

I like simple designs and decided to go with this. With a very simple editor I was able to go in and add our name and change the colors. Again, because I’m a lot behind on life these will go out as New Years cards!!

Minted Holiday Card

Not only was I able to personalize the front of the card there are also fun options for the back of your card as well as the envelope. Minted will even address the envelopes for you, so have your list ready!

My Top 3 DIY Home Makeovers

House Hunters and other shows of the like can really camouflage all of the drama that goes down when purchasing a home. The saying that goes something like you will never get the house you absolutely want without building it yourself is absolutely true. If only there was a half bath, and a true mudroom are things that I MAY or may not have uttered a million times or more while we were house hunting.

Compromise is a real thing when it comes to purchasing a home and if you’ve been around this blog long enough you remember how difficult our home buying process was back in 2013. We went from building a home to scrambling for a resale when our old home sold and we had no definite date on when we could move into our new one. Talk about stressful, God willing and the creek don’t rise I don’t hope to buy another home and move any time soon.

If you are in the market to purchase a new home, locating the proper insurance to cover your investment is just as important as finding your perfect home. Outside of paperwork galore, and the sheer nosiness of underwriters there will be some things you need streamlined and using Esurance to locate competitive insurance quotes for you may just keep you sane in the process. If you are not currently looking, searching new rates periodically, especially at the end of the year is a good time to see if you can save money. Esurance is a good tool for evaluating your current rates on not just home insurance but auto as well.

After purchasing this home I embarked on making it my own by doing a few DIY home makeover projects on the areas that I just couldn’t stand to look at. As 2017 looms I’m making a list of other areas that need a little love and nothing really gets me excited about making a few changes like looking back at past DIY projects. Make sure you sign up on the email list so you don’t miss a post in 2017!

Here are a few of my favorite transformations to date!
