{Organizing Mamas} Kids Play and Homework Space – Before

The school bell rang. The most glorious sound I’ve heard in awhile. I’m excited for a number of reasons but one of the most important ones is I get a chance to start back working on the rooms in my home, slowly decluttering them and putting in place storage solutions that work in keeping things in order around here. No doubt will the kids keep asking me for something like, stats homework help or whatever kids are doing these days at school. I don’t mind helping obviously because they are my kids. I know that if my kids were older I might not be so helpful, particularly when it comes to essay writing. I had one friend recommend that I pay for essay online, but I wasn’t too sure about it. However, when it comes to my young kids, it just means more excitement building up for when I can get my hands on decluttering the house.

Tia from the Chic SAHM and I are kindred spirits in wanting to declutter our spaces to make life easier! We have joined forces to bring you a fun series of challenges focusing on a target area in your home bi weekly. We will post the before photos of our spaces and in 2 weeks WE’LL as in her, I and YOU will reveal what our space looks like afterward.

No blog? No problem feel free to drop your photos on our FB feeds or on IG with the hashtag #OrganizingMamasChallenge on reveal week.

With school starting already for some and on the horizon for others we thought it would be great to focus on setting up organized play and/or homework spaces.

Here are the before photos of my children’s play/homework space.

DON’T JUDGE! I haven’t cleaned in there since May when school got out. They’ve played with friends in there, done crafts and a host of other things and I haven’t bothered with it since, but in 2 weeks it will have a makeover…maybe even a new color!

Keep in mind creating a homework space doesn’t have to be a designated room but could be a caddy with all of the supplies that a child would need to do homework. Use your imagination and not a ton of money.

We’ll see you in two weeks with our reformed spaces! Can’t wait to see yours.

Cabinet Organization – Part I

I have 458,638 cabinets in my kitchen…well not really but close. I am ashamed but not really to be truthful with you and tell you that all of them are a H.A.M. All of them.

My pantry makeover kicked off operation kitchen organization and I am proud to report that nearly 2 months later the space is still very much neat and tidy. Ask anyone who has not bothered to put the bread back in it’s labeled basket about me. They’ll tell you I’ve become quite anal about that space. It is now time to move onto the other cabinets.

Pantry Makeover

I finally completed a project around here. It only took me a couple of months to do what should’ve taken a weekend, like this past one but that’s neither here nor there. If you haven’t noticed my kitchen has a million cabinets and at one point all of them were a hodge podge of expired food and misplaced items.

Now I have four cabinets on the far wall of my kitchen that I consider to be my pantry done….and it feels good. I started off the year saying every space in this house would be organized by year’s end and I intend to keep that promise so I guess I really need to get going. I know half of my battle is going to be making sure that every little item in this house has a home so that’s where I started with this pantry makeover.

Homework Station Design in Process

Last week it dawned on me that we are nearly half way through Summer Vacation and before I know it the school bell will be ringing again. We’re headed to see the “Mouse” in a few weeks and when we return there will only be 3 weeks left to get school shopping and all of those things done.

I won’t say anxiety set in but let’s just say I’m tired of the clutter that comes with school and I need a solution to keep their artwork, school work, permission slips, book bags, markers, pencils, pens, flashcards, paint brushes, paint and folders off my kitchen table. After being in the house nearly a year we I’ve concluded that the workout room will be turned into a homework station /craft space for the children.

This wasn’t an easy decision to make. There is equipment in there that the previous owners left and while I’m not saying we don’t need a space to workout, I’m thinking the wine room will get refitted with less bulky equipment. My husband recently went and got a gym membership, I took that to mean he was throwing in the towel. It’s now time we I make the space useful….cause there are cobwebs forming in there. Wasteful.

Looking from left to right in the room this is what is currently there

I’m not saying it will be completely done before school starts but by the first day I hope to at least have desks, chairs and lamps in there for them. Funds will be low. I did say we are going to see the “Mouse” so there will be some Craigslist’ing, Ikea’ing, Goodwill’ing and DIY’ing going on. I do like the paint color and may leave it just making that entire back wall chalkboard…or maybe everything above the beadboard will get chalkboarded out. We’ll see.

Do you have a designated space for your children to do their homework? Should I leave the wall green?
