Hello November + Blogging Everyday

It is November. NO. VEM. BER.

How?

I’m sure the monotony and rigor of adulthood effortlessly blends hours into days and days into weeks and so on and so on. I never remember months and years moving as fast as they do now.

Nevertheless I’m staring another November in the face. Whether you have leisurely perused these e-pages for years or just got here yesterday this announcement has been the same since 2010. It’s National Blog Posting Month and I am committing to blogging everyday this month.

EVERY. DAY.

There have been times in the past 7 ish years that I haven’t successfully completed the challenge but I have succeeded more times than not.

Please sign up to get my posts to your inbox if you don’t already, and/or sign up for the newsletter that will start going out weekly….ish. Follow along on Facebook, Instagram, and you can find me on Snapchat under UnlikelyMartha.

Trust me, you don’t want to miss this epic display of foolery, life happenings, fashion, beauty, recipes, photography and videos I have planned for you. As a creative I often fall in a rut here and there and challenges like this force me to climb out of the box and shine creatively.  I’ll be so happy to have you and even happier if you decided to share the wealth and some of this good content to your social channels every now and again. Nothing makes a blogger beam more than a little share love.

I would also totally love to connect with you. Leave me some comments, here, there and everywhere. It might not be today, it might not be tomorrow but I will get back to you.

So here’s to November. I’ll see you around the way, tomorrow.

The Best HBCU Homecoming

I am a proud HBCU graduate. The rich history and traditions of Historically Black Colleges and Universities span hundreds of years and across familial generations. Showing pride for the legacy that defines HBCUs and their origination consists of untold stories of trendsetters and trailblazers that didn’t let the color of their skin dictate their right to a quality education. Following in the steps of these phenomenal individuals  makes that pride burn even brighter. If you’ve ever known an HBCU graduate you know we stay hype and our rivalries are strong.  The history of our institutions of higher learning are rich, complicated and vast. Our loyalty goes beyond a name, it hinges on a rich history of  black men and women who fearlessly educated themselves, served our communities and dared to disrupt the idea of what society at the time said an educated person looked like. Some of this world’s greatest inventions were created by these genius minds.

It was on thee highest of 7 hills in Tallahassee, FL at Florida A&M University that I was introduced to adult life, its hard knocks, life long friendships, hangovers, trap music, my husband …..a degree.

Two weeks ago my husband,  two of my best friends, and I took a road trip back to where we all connected for a little homecoming action.

HBCU homecomings are a phenomenon in their own right. Stepping back onto campus brought back all kinds of memories. Memories of that time I got out of my car and my heel broke, and recollections of club behavior  when we had to link arms to make it back to the car, and those times when you were her eyes and ears when he was seen across town. You know, when you honed your  ride or die homegirl skills.

…….. and the exact area where I heard my now husband yell out, ” Aye, Mimi.”

So. Many. Memories.

FAMU Homecoming

An HBCU homecoming is an amazing mash up of loud music, good food, and vendors. It’s best described as a cultural experience.

I remember it being warm during homecoming but this year the record heat curbed my enthusiasm for going to the game. When I say it was hot, it had to be close to 95 degrees without a cloud in the sky, and against my better packing judgement I didn’t pack a pair of shorts. Sitting in that stadium with jeans on was a recipe for heat stroke so I passed.

I took one for the culture team,  grabbed a watermelon lemonade, some shade and a seat for a little people gazing.

We had grand plans of partying Saturday night away, instead we opted for a girls night in complete with delivered food, laughs and sleep. This getting old thing makes things so simple. I can’t wait to go back next year. I was called Ma’am a few times so that was a rude awakening that I am not to be confused with the younger homecoming set. Next year I’m trying to be up in the parking lot with the old alumni and their RVs. I’m glamping to homecoming next year. Watch.

What college did you go to? Did you enjoy your college experience? When was the last time you went to your school’s homecoming?

I’m Nominated for a Domino Mag Design Blog Award | Would Love Your Vote!

Y’ALL.

Last week I received an email from the Digital Editorial Director of Domino Magazine congratulating me on being included as a semi finalist in the inaugural Domino Magazine Design Blog Awards.

As I speed read it, my eyes shifted back to the subject line and then the dots connected and I’m like, “THEE Domino Magazine?”

*reads email again*

All kinds of legitimate verbiage, like this is really real.  I proceeded to look at my competitors and realized that once again I am a very small fish in a big pond of other amazing bloggers nominated in the same category. Although I’m truly the underdog in the category, the bright side gave me all the fuzzy feels that although my reach is smaller, the impact that I am making to be recognized by these types of outlets is an indicator that I’m on the right path and it’s okay to continue to grow this brand of mine as authentically and grassroots as I feel.

Nominations were submitted and I am thrilled that enough people thought of this space to get me to semi finalist status.

NOW

I need your votes. The winner of each category will be determined by popular vote. Voting takes place daily through October 31, 2017.

Soooooooo…….in these past seven years if I have ever inspired you to cook, bake, try a new fashion, product, clean your house, organize something or simply lay around and do nothing would you mind giving your girl a vote or 11 to get through the end of the voting period.

It’s super easy:

Chewy Ginger Snaps

Thank you to Bigelow for partnering with Unlikely Martha to highlight how taking a little time for ourselves is much needed. This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #teaproudly #CollectiveBias

Days full of chaos and ripping and running just blend into one other until one week turns into two and into three and before you know it another month is upon you. We are in the middle of October already when it seems like we were just all pumpkin spice everything. Now the holidays will be upon us, and we’ll be scratching our heads wondering where 2017 went like tomorrow.

I’m trying to slow down a bit and savor the moments. I’ve been limiting my time on social media in the evenings and I have implemented a wind down routine at least once a week that includes a warm cup of tea and watching This Is Us with my son.

On a recent trip to Walmart I picked up Bigelow Decaffinated Green Tea along with a new mug, cause I like pretty mugs.

Bigelow has a wide variety of teas that may suit you. Be sure to check out their Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages for a list of product varieties. Bigelow is all for enjoying and celebrating the small things that make up the big picture of our lives. The Bigelow mission of tea proudly is about the creating a quality product that can make those special moments even better. Learn more about the #TeaProudly mission!

Bigelow Green Tea

Bigelow Tea

One day my son wanted to bake some goodies and pulled out my mom’s big book of recipes and he landed on chewy ginger snaps. We made them and made them again, and they are a tasty companion to my green tea in the evenings.Bigelow has a great line of teas that are suitable for a number of occasions. To make things even more convenient for you, click the tea on the photo to conveniently order it online!

The thing with regular ginger snaps is they are like bricks, but not these. They are softer, still thin and wafer like but think soft batch in texture.

They taste so incredibly good and the spice is just right for the holidays.

Before the crazy of the end of the year sets in, I encourage you to find a wind down routine that allows you to decompress from the long days of shopping and partying and entertaining that are to come. Something as small as looking forward to that warm cup of tea, or dessert or television show does wonders for getting you through the day.
