Children Family Health Summer

Structured Summertime Fun for Children

I despise structure, however at the same time I crave it. I know weird, I guess I liken it to the need to be able to do whatever I want but have some structure while I’m doing whatever I want.

I mentioned earlier in the week house hunting basically consumed my time for the past few weeks and while I was staring with glazed eyes at what seemed like every house on the market in the Atlanta area, I kind of let my children do their own thing. Well letting them “do their own thing” resulted in their sleeping and eating schedules to be completely thrown off.

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Strong 4 Life campaign stresses the importance of making sure our children have some sort of structure during the summer to ward off restlessness and irritability. Yes, please. Tell me more, because the little people attitudes around here are at an all time high.

Tuesday Truth…I Haven’t Been Taking My Pills

…but you didn’t possibly think I was talking about birth control pills did you? *hollers* FYI this baby shop is shut down…possibly indefinitely at this point. I’ll let you know if plans change.

Seriously though, the pills I speak of are for my high blood pressure. Before you start chastising me and throwing me the digital mean mug, lets just say I take them, but in a very sporadic manner. I have removed salt, red meat and other naggy culprits that contain salt yet my number is still on the high side and I know its because I need to exercise and be diligent about taking my medicine. Heredity much?

HBP

A far cry from 120/80 *weeps*

I am supposed to take them twice a day, unfortunately I probably take one every two days or so. I knooooow. Please don’t judge me. I don’t like taking them because they make me groggy, and I know I should probably speak with the doctor about changing my dosage or the medicine itself but I don’t want to chance the side effects of starting a new medicine which for me is nearly a week of awful headaches.

I bring this here because it is certainly time for me to start taking my health more seriously. Daily I read so many of your blogs that offer great information on how to get and stay fit, how to eat healthy and are just overall encouraging as I follow along on your journey and those you spotlight who have made lifestyle changes to be more health conscious.

Another challenge is I’m skinny. A week of cardio may drop me 10 pounds and when you are teetering at 135….I’m not interested. I’m one of those girls that has always wanted hips and booty so I am trying to hold on to the very little that I do have…read none.

So begins my process of researching the things that I need to be eating that will help me maintain a healthy weight while exercising. Today begins the day I set the timer on my phone to go off and remind me to take my medicine. Today I will call the Dr. and make my 6 month blood pressure check appointment that I have been putting off for two months. Today is the day I take the reins of my health and go about getting healthy. Today I will make the promise to live my best life mentally and physically not just for myself but for my family. Today is the day I come after Kelly Rowland and her skinny thickness!! YES…Today is the day!!!!

Thank you Yum Yucky, Rx Fitness Lady, Brooklyn Active Mama, and Bossygirl 1980. If your goal was to inspire one you did it….I’m getting up and getting active.

Somebody hold me accountable…Okay?!

Where my cheerleaders at?!! Who needs to join me on this quest? Speak up…cyber home girls uplift and encourage and turn into drill sergeants if necessary….

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Strong 4 Life Panel

As a blogger I love to come to this space on the web and share my life with you. As a mom, I am also passionate about using this platform to share vital information pertaining to the health and well being of children and people in general.

On Wednesday, I was thrilled to be invited to a mom bloggers panel hosted by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Strong 4 Life team. Childhood obesity is the focus of the Strong 4 Life team and a few months ago the campaign came under fire for their billboards regarding the childhood obesity epidemic in Georgia. Nearly 40% of all children in the state of Georgia are obese according to the CDC statistics.

While many did not agree with their shock tactics the facts and numbers are just as equally shocking. Whether one sees a major problem with the ads or not, the bottom line is if we want to see our children lead full and healthy lives we all have a responsibility. I say we because even though this may not hit home with you it very well may hit very close to home with family members or friends who are battling this problem within their families. Knowledge and the sharing of information is vital.

Starting the process of getting our families healthy is quite simple. Getting active and eating healthy are the first steps. The Strong 4 Life website offers some other tips here.

I urge you to please take a look at Strong 4 Life and what they are trying to do to raise awareness of childhood obesity and healthy living. Although their focus is the state of Georgia this is a nationwide problem. Please educate yourselves and those around you about the dangers of not starting our children off on the right foot when it comes to living healthy lives.

Ready.Set.Go

A few posts ago, matter of fact right here, I explained how finding out that I have high cholesterol sparked an interest in me to pick up running again.

I was wondering how I would fit running into my lifestyle. After putting off starting for nearly two weeks, yesterday I laced up my shoes, put on my head scarf, slipped in my ear buds and hit the pavement. I actually did alot better than I thought, considering it has been a while. I brisk walked, then ran and I alternated between the two for about 30 minutes

I was adventurous my first day out. I ran on the main street, not sure if that was a good idea seeing that I was about a mile from my house when I thought my scrawny legs wouldn’t get me back home.Oh but they did, thanks to the Trick Daddy blaring in my head phones #dontjudgeme. My heart was thumping, my throat was burning, but that “hood music” banging in my ear got me up that hill and back to the house.

Before heading out I started dinner and stressed to the Mr. the importance of not letting our dinner burn while I was out. Glad to know he can follow directions. I returned home to a nearly finished meal. I plan on trying out a few scenarios regarding the best time for me to run. More than likely it will be a combination of sorts dependent on all of the 1,476,893 factors that go into my daily routine..

So for now the plan is three times a week. I am following a 5K training plan. It is a total of 8 weeks and at the end I should be able to run 2 miles without stopping. I’m excited, and will keep you posted on my progress

Have I motivated you?! Will anybody else be joining me on this 8 week challenge?
