The Takeover

November 16, 2011

I know I was supposed to post pics from my trip today but for some reason my computer is acting funny and I am not in the mood to fight with it. Tomorrow, or some day after I will post them.

I was stretching for something to write about. This blog challenge is getting just that…challenging. Then I thought about something that perturbed me and thought I would bring it to you my extended family.

So look. On Tuesdays and Thursdays I run with a few women early in the morning as in 5a. Initially there was only three of us. We had our route, we opened the group for others to join us. Weeeelllllll, this lady joined the group and practically took over. We are a part of a bigger organization called Black Girls Run and she just took over posting about others joining the run, she changed the route, time and everything. No credit given to the lady who was the originator of the route.

Now.  I am thinking protocol would say consult with the person who initially started the run to see if they were willing to hand over the reigns, if not work with them to see if they need your assistance. Otherwise, go somewhere else and start your own run…at least that’s my opinion.

Needless to say I haven’t ran with the group since this coup took over. I am really funny about stuff like that. I just think its a respect and common courtesy issue. I don’t know. These are some of the reasons why I don’t get involved in church activities and things of the like. Some people have that take over spirit and it just doesn’t settle well with me. God is still working on me so I’ve decided to fall back and be quiet.

Bloggies…am I being silly. Is it just that this lady is on a hundred thousand trillion while I’m chilling on the beach with a Corona that I don’t get the thirst she has in taking over this run. What do you think? I said I am going to run in the morning, but I’m just not sure I can properly edit my thoughts at that hour of the morning if something out of the way is said. I might be stretching..seriously. Am I? Don’t lie.

I don’t think you’re being silly at all. I totally think that there should be a certain order to things. If she came into the group, and felt like things weren’t being handled properly, then it should have been addressed, to everyone, instead of just taking over. But, with that being said, I’m sensitive to that sort of thing to. If I don’t get a good vibe from someone, or feel like I can’t get on board with their intentions, I stay away.

Okay, I’m straddling the fence with this one. My question is…Why hasn’t the group organizer or other group members said anything to her? I’m sure you are not the only person who has this concern. If the changes were put on the table for all members to weigh in I don’t see any issue with it. I understand there is an organizer but it’s a ‘group’ so all members should have a voice. However, if this was done with no consideration for others then I totally understand why you have issues with the situation.

SN – Thanks for posting this. I have been looking for workout options in my area and may now have a new option.

There is a decency and order to everything. I think you’ve nailed the issue spot on and are handling it well. I would continue to run at the previous agreed time and the previous route before she took over.

Running is your way of releasing steam and calming down. If you sense you might issues with her why bother to even put yourself in that situation?

Hmmmm. The original leader needs to open her mouth and say something! That being said, don’t let this stop your early morning run! I keep thinking of joining the early morning one over here! I will! Sooner or later!

Hmmmm…. I see your point. I wonder how the originator of the group feels about these changes though. I agree with others – don’t let this stop your morning run. From earlier posts, I’d say that running is important to you. Keep it up and push the foolishness aside. If all else fails, find another group to run with?

maybe it’s just me but I would have done the exact same thing. I would fall back. Everyone else can do what they want but I wouldn’t continue to participate in anything that would make me feel uncomfortable in any way.

There is an order of things but some people are just bossy they like to have things done their way with no compromise or thought for others. The group leader needs to say something and maybe they can work together to solve the conflict ( I am studying this in class right now) Keep running. The only time I run is if something or someone is after me.

I would have probably done the same thing but since you enjoy running..i would have a conversation with the main person because if it’s a group…everyone should have a say because it impacts everyone. good luck with this…my running partner and i make decisions together because it affects the both of us.

I’m a funny acting person and girlfriend would have gotten a bit of attitude from me. Nothing sets my soup on fire more than a know-it-all, take over without consulting “person”. Depending on the day, I probably would have said something. If the other people were ok with her change, they could continue to roll with Little Miss Missy but I would stick with what I know. Getting up at 5am is challenging enough as well as the run, therefore, I’d probably find another group or just roll with those who are still game with the original plan.

Now, I’m funny acting to this may not be a popular opinion.

Nope, I don’t think you’re being silly. The person who started everything should at least say something, but if they are not, then I say don’t change your time or your route. I have a big hangup about people like that. It’s cool to want to put your two cents in, but you really have to respect the group that was there before you joined.

This made me smile because I’m the same way about some things! I’m huge stickler for principle!

Has anyone else alluded to being perturbed by bossy coming in and changing things up? Or have they just gone with it? I don’t think you are over-reacting at all. I think if you are invited to join a new group, you don’t just take over. Period. Unless there is no one actually taking the lead and the group seems like a mess. But it seems like you all initially had your group, your route and your time. Seems to me she didn’t like that and changed it to probably what works for HER. Nope…I would be upset and not behind her at all.

P.S. Where do y’all run at 5 am???
