5 Tips for Keeping Spring/Summer Colds Away

I was provided product and promotional items for review. All opinions are mine..you already know.

This past winter season over here was brutal. If y’all can remember it was like as soon as one stopped coughing, the other started, and I’m sure that cycle repeated itself at least 3 times and then I started coughing..and yeah.

We get through winter season and forget to continue using those same tips to keep Spring and Summer colds away, and if you’ve ever had a cold in the summer…MERCY.

1.) REST: Summer comes and it is normal to throw caution to the wind when it comes to maintaining a healthy sleep schedule. Children need rest to regulate their immune system and with all day running at camp and various activities it is very easy for exhaustion to set in. Maintaining a fairly consistent sleep and nap regimen may help.

2.) HYDRATE: Not only does staying hydrated keep us cool in the summer but it helps keep us healthy. I don’t need to tell you that sodas, and sugary drinks are really of no help in this area. H2O is the way to go.

3.) WASH.YOUR.HANDS: This is even more important now. Days spent outside making mud pies, picking up creepy crawlies etc. are on the horizon. Bacteria and germs run rampant at camps, pools etc. Stress the importance of hand washing at all times.

4.) HEALTHY DIET: I’m not sure about you but I find my children will easily eat more fruit in the summer. Cold fruit salads and watermelon disappear around here. Use this opportunity to make sure you are giving them lots of cold sweet fruits. The vitamins in summer fruits are excellent in helping the immune system fight off bad germs.

5.) KEEP YOUR CHILDREN AT HOME: If your child does get sick offer other parents the courtesy of keeping your child at home until they are better. I know this isn’t always easy, however I feel it is a respect thing to make sure you are aware of the health of your own child before sending them to camp to potentially make other children sick. We all have a duty as parents and offering this courtesy may help keep children well over the summer season.

There are times where we can follow all precautionary measures and we still end up with a sick child. I am not a parent that believes in medicating until I feel it is absolutely necessary. In those instances I look for medicines that are geared toward children. I was supplied a sample of Children’s Mucinex. I have not had the opportunity to use the medication, however it is in the cabinet and I am not against using it if I feel it necessary.

I try to keep medication available in case, cause no one likes those middle of the night runs to Walgreens. If you are like me and have a just in case arsenal, check out Children’s Mucinex and make an educated decision on whether you feel this is a product that is right for your child/family.

Wardrobe Wednesday – Summer Flats

ShoeDazzle is sponsoring today’s discussion, however all opinions are my own. You already know.

As a self professed fab mom I have the habit of purchasing a ton of dress up clothing and high heels but on those days when I feel like dressing down I’m finding myself being more drab than fab because I haven’t done a great job of purchasing nice kick around clothing and shoes for those hot days when no one has time for a maxi dress and fancy shoes.

Lately I’ve been hanging out in shorts, tops and dresses but to my dismay my collection of flat shoes is minimal, and I don’t really count the numerous pairs of colorful flip flops that I have accumulated over the years from Old Navy. At this point I have worn my Tory Burch flats to death because I have few options and I’m in dire need of a pedicure….but that’s neither here nor there.

I am on the hunt for a few pairs of cute, function flats/flip flops/sandals that I can throw on and that are reasonable in cost. With summer here I really have no desire to drag two children into the shoe store so I am going to turn to some online options in the next few weeks to see what I can  get.

One online shoe retailer I have been peeking at is Shoe Dazzle. I recently completed their online quiz and they supplied me with a showroom of shoes based on the pictures that I selected during the quiz. ShoeDazzle is currently offering 25% off your first purchase made within 2 days of taking the online quiz. Get started here!

Here are my top four picks and you will probably see me rocking at least two pair of these in the very near future.

ShoeDazzle

In the past I have been leery of these online shoe shops but I have been purchasing from them more often and ShoeDazzle has proven to provide timely shipping with true to size fitting with my past experiences. Recently Rachel Zoe has come on board to offer her style advice regarding on trend shoes for those who may be a little style challenged…and in my eyes Rachel is always on.

In addition to Rachel’s style advice there is a Daily Fix shoe which is sold on that day only with free shipping. Once you get the hang of things there is also a VIP Membership program that provides members with free shipping on all orders and exclusive offers for 10-25% off regular priced merchandise for $9.95 per month.

ShoeDazzle is proving to be  a great resource for online shoe shopping while helping women make good, on trend shoe purchasing decisions without dragging a girl friend along or a depending on a small child to tell you whether or not a shoe looks good.

She So Random

The past few weeks around here have been extra chill. For a New York minute I was starting to feel bad about not really being productive then I got over it.  We’ve been going to bed late at night and sleeping late in the morning. We have the next 9 months to be on a schedule. I think we’ll enjoy these last two weeks going with the flow.

Speaking of New York I am ramping up my preparations to head to the Big Apple for BlogHer in a couple of weeks. I have childcare lined up and the majority of my outfits have been planned out via Evernote in this manner.

I do need to pick up a few things and I plan on grabbing those sometime this weekend. My sense of urgency is real because my son goes back to school on Monday the 6th and I get back on the 5th so everything needs to be in order.

I can’t wait to meet some of my bloggy friends and just have a good time. I have been invited to a few private parties and I do plan to attend. For the amount of money that has been dished out I need to get the most of the weekend.

I am thankful for BlogHer this year because it is keeping my mind off the impending anniversary of my mother’s death which is on July 27, and her birthday is on August 4th. With so much to do I won’t really have time to sit and mope. I suppose this is a good thing.

Lil Mama is now fully potty trained. No diapers or wipes to be found around these parts. She is even starting to go on her own…but if the light is out in the bathroom no haps. I “stared” she says, and “stared” means scared.

I have been on a mission to take better care of Lil Mama’s hair. Y’all know how much of a hair person I am not. I can cornrow really well and I’ve been known to sew in a weave or three. Yes, me. That’s how I made money in college.  I tried out a coconut oil and honey prepoo on her hair and I am a believer. I was putting ponytails in it and her edges were starting to be affected so I have been two strand twisting or cornrowing it. I have seen an improvement over the past few weeks. Now to be consistent.

.

My son took his first flight alone from Las Vegas to here on July 5th. I was a nervous wreck. He did fine. He was such a big boy. My dad bribed him with an iPod. I really didn’t want him to have one then my dad had to remind me that he bought me a Gameboy when I was his age…Wellllllllllllll…..moving on. Could I be a hater?

.

My son is taking up soccer for the fall. I am looking forward to seeing how he enjoys it. Truth be told I never really thought he liked football much. He requested soccer and luckily we didn’t miss registration so I guess I’m now a soccer mom.

I’ll start doing house updates sometime next week.

Enough about our goings on. How are you? What’s been going on in your world?

Last Day…

So cliche but it seems like just yesterday and not nearly 8 months ago that I posted about my son’s first day of Kindergarten and now today is his last.

After his award ceremony on Monday

He accomplished so many milestones this year. I am so incredibly proud of him. I feel like he really came into himself this year. We had no major mishaps and his teacher was exceptional.

We made it through our first school year. Now the questions is what to do with them for the summer. In the past I have done a rather poor job of keeping them highly entertained but now that Addison is older and can hang I plan to have a fun filled summer in store for them..

What do you have planned for the summer?
