{How To} Natural Hair Kids Protective Style

“I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Influence Central for Just For Me. I received product samples to facilitate my review and a promotional item to thank me for my participation.”

Keeping my daughter’s hair in protective styles is not only good for my time but also good for her hair. I wash her hair weekly with the Just for Me Hair Milk collection, and dependent on my time I will either cornrow her entire head or cornrow the back and do something quick with the top. One of my go to styles is this quick  twisted pin up style that I have to refresh just once during the week.

Start with freshly washed, or in this case untwisted hair.

Apply a styling aid. I applied the Just for Me gel and Curl Perfecter for hold, and sheen. You can find these products at your local Walmart and they are really great in helping to detangle and smooth out the hair, making sure you get a sleek finish. I put a small bit on and finger detangled prior to twisting.

To complete this style you will also need bobby pins.

After applying the product of your choice, haphazardly twist chunks of hair. No rhyme or reason to this step, you can choose large or small twists. Make sure to give the twists a little twirl at the end to seal the ends, which I didn’t do in this picture!

Now you are ready to pin. Leave out a few twists in the front, while you start to pin from the back. I suggest playing with the twists before pinning to make sure you get a result that you like. It is likely each time you do this style you will end up with something different.

Once you’ve secured the back, get creative with the few twists left in the front. Swoop to the side, or pin straight back, this is what gives the style flavor.

Our new wash routine has truly been made so much easier with use of the #5FingerChallenge and Just for Me Hair Milk Collection. You can read about the wash routine here. To make wash time a little more bearable try using the #5FingerChallenge by detangling with your fingers. The results are better for the hair and hopefully less stress on you as we know wash days for some can be a struggle!

Italian Sausage Tortellini

Italian Sausage Tortellini

Our weeks have been crazy with, ballet, piano, baseball, and soccer practices.  Without proper planning these next few months could dig a serious hole in our pockets with eating out and I’m determined not to let that happen so I’ve been experimenting with new quick, easy and tasty recipes that make for great left overs. Monday and Tuesdays are the worse and my husband and I have to split directions each with a kid in tow. On these days I either cook early or the night before and reheat on low on the stovetop instead of the microwave.

Unfortunately there were no leftovers from this recipe. Even after I  burned the tortellini a little these folks scraped the pot and were looking for more. I put this one at the very top of the must make list.

I used turkey Italian Sausage with the following ingredients.

Italian Sausage Tortellini

Prior to making this recipe I had never had tortellini. I went on a whim and grabbed this brand because it was all that was on the shelf and it was awesome…I mean considering I had nothing else to measure it to. So use your judgment but this brand worked for me.

Cook time:
Total time:
Serves: 4
Quick and Easy Tortellini
Ingredients
  • 1 TBS olive oil
  • 2 cups baby spinach (fresh is best)
  • 2cups diced onions
  • 1 pound of Italian Sausage ( I used turkey)
  • 2 cloves of minced garlic
  • 3/4 cup chicken broth
  • 14.5 oz can of petite diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 heavy cream
  • 9 oz. box of tortellini (boxed or fresh based on preference)
  • salt and pepper
Instructions
  1. Heat olive oil in a non stick skillet. Once the oil is hot add the onions and cook until translucent. Add sausage and break into crumbles as it cooks ( squeeze the sausage out of the casing prior to starting to cook, makes life easier and the onions won’t burn). Turn the heat up a little until the sausage is cooked then reduce the heat to low.
  2. Add in garlic, broth, tomatoes, and cream. Stir well until ingredients are well blended.
  3. Add in tortellini and increase heat until boiling
  4. Reduce heat and cover, cooking for about 15 minutes or until the tortellini becomes tender.
  5. Now season with salt and pepper to taste. Taste before you start adding salt and pepper, I didn’t really add much of either because it didn’t need it.
  6. After seasoning to taste add spinach and cover again until the spinach is wilted.

10 Years of Marriage and Figuring It All Out

On September 2 my husband and I celebrated T E N years of marriage. Seeing that we are not of the fancy persuasion for such things we kept the festivities light, mostly because it fell on a Wednesday and I’m kind of funny about asking people to keep my children especially during the week. Ten years ago we excitedly repeated  our vows to a judge at the courthouse when I was nearly 7 months pregnant. We made the hard decision to cancel our wedding after finding out we were expecting . I did contemplate throwing a big shindig for this year, then we started looking at the costs and decided there were bigger fish to fry than to plan a wedding after already being married for 10 years.

Instead we took a trip downtown to this new attraction called Paranoia Quest. Apparently this concept is pretty new around Atlanta, and basically  we had to solve a series of clues needed to complete a mission and get ourselves out of  three separate rooms to  win the game. We lost, but had a ton of fun. Not as much fun I’m sure as having our pockets $10K+ lighter and having partied into the night with a few hundred of our closest friends but…..you know.

Our game time was 6:45, we got there a little early so we decided to take a little excursion around the sketchy streets of downtown Atlanta while  waiting on one of our favorite couples to join us who also happened to be celebrating their anniversary.

Paranoia Quest Atlanta

In hindsight the game was pretty indicative of some portions of what it takes to have a great marriage. A few takeaways for me were:

  1. Keep People Out of Your Business: There were 6 of us in the group total. Two we knew, two we didn’t. It was utter chaos trying to work with that many people to figure out a simple clue. I liken that pretty much to keeping your circle small. We all have issues and it’s great to have a sounding board but keep it at a board and not a billboard…you feel me?!
  2. Differing Perspectives Can Be Good: Solving those clues required different perspectives and for that the group was great.  As a wife I like to think I know everything and I don’t. Being open to criticism and new ways of thinking keeps things fresh and exciting.
  3. Ask for and Accept Help: There was a point in the game where the couple we didn’t know insisted on hovering over one of the clues and we couldn’t get close. That was aggravating. In a marriage if you can’t figure something out, or need assistance it is okay to ask your mate for help. No good in trying to be the big wig if you are hindering progress, or festering anger. I have learned over the years not to expect my husband to know what I am thinking. While yes it is aggravating to ask for the dishes to be watched when my eyes aren’t the only ones that see them, I just ask. It’s simpler than starting an argument, and at the end of the day I didn’t have to wash the dishes.
  4. Be a Team Player: When we all worked together to solve a clue we were like Kindergarteners who had been given a special snack. It just felt good. I’ve had to learn over the past year that I can’t make all of the rules and expect him to follow them. We need to work together to make sure our house runs smoothly and everyone’s feelings are being considered. We mastered that this year and it makes a huge difference.
  5. Let Loses Be Your Motivation to Keep Trying: I mentioned earlier we lost the game, but the first thing my husband and I said was, “We’re coming back!” Let challenges push you to keep trying, utilizing what you did right each time to get to the finish line. We’ll go back in a few weeks and use the few clues we remember to hopefully get us to win the challenge. Life has been the same way for us. As new challenges present themselves we use old theories and build on them to solve the problem. It takes time and effort but the satisfaction of jumping another hurdle is so worth it.

Have you been to one of these places before? Have any additional marriage advice tips to add?

Fab Top 5 – Fall Front Porch Décor Inspiration

Fall Porch Decor Ideas

As a child, getting me to eat breakfast or any meal besides dinner was a feat. Well to be frank old habits die hard because I will still go an entire day with out eating, but back to the story. So this particular day not only was I starving but my Stepmother was cooking my favorite meal of fried pork chops, fried apples, cabbage and cornbread muffins. I probably hadn’t asked less than a million times when was dinner going to be ready so  when she finally said come eat……..

Maaaaan, I went to doing a Sound of Music, Maria in the meadow twirl with arms open and all. Well I spun a little too many times and found myself stumbling and before I knew it I cracked my forehead on the corner of the wall. Needless to say I had to wait another 20 minutes before eating. I said all of that to say, my excitement for Fall is just as intense as that twirl and wall collision.

I’ve kept out of Hobby Lobby and most craft stores because their tendency these days to put up harvest decor months before time ruins the welcoming of the season for me. Now that we are in September I just can’t contain myself. I walked the aisles of Michael’s the other day with the silliest grin on my face making note of all the new fall owl  additions I plan to make and ordering an insane amount of Bath and Body Works “Leaves” candles that would make me hoarder certified.

First up is my fall porch. Here are a few of my inspiration ideas. The pumpkins will get added later because I don’t want them to rot.

Getting at least one cornstalk for my mailbox, not from Kroger though. They wanted $20 last year. I’ll find a farm first.

Anybody else ready for fall?

Oh….and keep your pumpkin flavored EVERYTHING. I like mine on the porch. Last year I had 10. I’m thinking of going big this year, 50 too many or nah?!!
