Children Lil Man Parenting

Piano is For Girls?

I let my son take the summer off from piano. He decided to learn piano after reading a few reviews on Instrument Find. It seemed like the perfect instrument for him to learn! A few weeks ago, I asked him if he was ready to begin lessons again. Normally he is very excited about piano lessons so I was caught off guard when he said he didn’t want to play any more. I asked him why. He told me that a few of the boys in his class told him that boys only play sports and not instruments and if that was true he didn’t want to play anymore.

I told him a.) not to believe everything people tell him b.) there are lots of men that play the piano and that what he was told was not true and c.) anything a boy can do so can girls and vice versa. He smiled and said he was ready for lessons to start up again.

RECITAL

Yahhh…mommy saves the day.

Then I started thinking about the subconscious gender assignments that we give to our children. I will be honest and be the first to say I am not fond of my son playing with a kitchen, but when I really think about it what’s really wrong with that. Men cook, men play instruments, men dance. I have to self profess that I am a hypocrite. My husband cooks in a kitchen, but I won’t let my son have one, and he’s asked. What’s the big deal? Am I afraid he will turn out gay? Maybe….I’m just being honest!

In retrospect, over here we are good for saying boys do this and girls do that. Now that I really think about it, we need to stop. Maybe when we were coming up those things stood true, but now we live in a more diverse society and I think its important to teach my son to be more open minded. I mean after all, men are all over the television cooking, baking, designing clothes and interiors, and raising children….some are gay, others are straight. Doing something a “girl” does won’t make my son gay, but continuing to fill his head with such will make him just as ignorant as the little boys that told him males don’t play instruments.

What’s your take? What are you teaching your children when it comes to gender assignments?

Lil Man Milestones

..He went to Kindergarten

My first born went to Kindergarten. I have you know, I didn’t shed a tear.

Not.One.

Wanted to. Held them in. Although the lady blocking the door was crying a river. After looking at how silly she looked, I squeezed my eyes real tight  and did the play off eye rub like something was in my eye.

He woke up very excited.  I wonder how long that will last.  He got in the class, found his seat and sat down like a champ. I won’t tell you Lil Mama was going on a rampage in the class pulling stuff off the shelves and scribbling on people’s work while I was trying to capture a few memories…should’ve put her in the stroller… hindsight is always twenty twenty. Anywho, I did manage a few pics while wrangling her with one hand and snapping with the other…

I asked did he read my note. He says, “I saw it, but what did it say” *sigh*  Tomorrow I’ll draw a picture

The obligatory backpack shot

Just before he told me “Bye, you can leave now”

Asked why he was staring out of the window. Said he was reflecting on his day…I guess

I have been inducted into the elementary school mothers crew. How did your induction go? Please don’t scare those who have this hurdle looming ahead of them.

Children Lil Man Weekend

Fun Friday

I did it. I survived the summer. It’s over.

This has been one loooong summer. At times it feels like it slow poked and at others it flew by. But I’m going to say the general consensus is with no less than four children in my care at least a week at a time with breaks here and there when they switched and went to my inlaws, this was the summer that I thought would never end.

Last night my stepdaughter went home and I went to Lil Man’s Kindergarten orientation..it’s official! Monday, school bells ringing.

Soo, I’ve decided not to let Lil Man ride the school bus. After I spoke with his teacher, who I loooove by the way she confirmed my thoughts that the bus is super rowdy and if I am able to drop and pick up to do that. I’ve also decided on packing lunch..saw the menu..say no more.

Now things can go back to normal. I can start blogging, taking photos and grocery shopping once a week instead of everyday trying to feed these kids. I feel like August 1 is a new beginning and I am treating it as such. Time to get back to work on my endeavors..I’m planning a mom’s night out event here in Atlanta…deets coming soon!

The fall for me is action packed. Time for shuffling Lil Man to piano, football practice and the newly added Tae Kwon Do two days a week along with my marathon training and I am going to be busy. We will be doing quite a bit of traveling. I am looking forward to fall my favorite time of the year. The living room is going to get a makeover and I want to do a few decorative things around the house via thrifting and DIY projects..Lawd. It will all be blogged. Promise.

Welp, tomorrow its going down. I’m doing a flash mob. Yasssss….Meeeeee.  Just one of those things to say you’ve done. Cross y’alls fingers that the Mr. comes out and tapes it so I can post here for your viewing and laughing pleasure.

Have a great weekend…What’s on your agenda?

Fashion Mimi

Fashionable Atlanta Blogger Meetup

First let me say thank you for all of the kind words on my Wednesday post. I get those moments every now and then, as expected. However, I am so thankful for all that I have been given and for her memories that thankfully I don’t stay in that place for long. Thanks again!!

Now on to fun stuff!

Last Saturday, Trina from Baby Shopaholic and I attended the first Fashionable Atlanta blogger meetup. We started off the evening with light fare and drinks at Cafe Circa.

Next we headed on over to Envy boutique to get the party started. From the start of the party until the end it was a great time. I got the opportunity to meet alot of wonderful ladies who fashion blog, which is a welcome break from my Google reader chock full of mommy blogs! We ate cupcakes, appetizers and drank Mimosas and took photos.

The Swag bags were FAB and there were tons of giveaways. I even won 20% of a full makeup application. I will review some of the products as they were definitely awesome.  The greatest prize of the night consisted of winning a year’s worth of shoes from Sole Society. Prior to the drawing Trina and I did a pinky swear that if either of us won the Twitter based contest we would split the winnings. Nope, I didn’t win but Trina did! Woot Woot..shoes for me! I may not hit her up for all of my winnings but I hope to at least get a pair of boots out of the pact!

Eboni presenting Trina with her our shoe certificate!!

After the event, seeing that we don’t get out much we headed over to Two Urban Licks for some chatting and Cosmos. Overall great night. Counting down until my next night out!
