Gray Hair Today. No Gray Tomorrow

Thank you to No Gray for partnering with Unlikely Martha. I have been compensated for this post. All opinions are mine.

Indecisiveness is weaved into the fabric of who I am. One minute I’m feeling something, the next minute I am not. I can over think the smallest of things and jump the gun on far more significant scenarios. One thing is certain, I like options.

Options are great. Having the ability to change effortlessly from one option to another in a world where we have so many things to choose from is refreshing. Not having to feel totally committed to something involving the way I look makes me extremely happy!

I’ve been very vocal about not dying my hair and embracing my gray strands that I also affectionately refer to as glitter highlights. I take special care in making sure my stylist cuts them just right so that they fall as a continuous layer, but lately I’ve been thinking about how those glitter sprinkled strands might look like blended in with the rest of my hair.

I thought about putting in a rinse but I know those don’t often take well coupled with the fact that I don’t do hair salons creates a major problem. A huge mess of a problem, I know because I’ve tried it before.

Instead I’m giving No Gray a go. This small bottle comes equipped with a comb that can allow me to cover as many or as little glitter highlights as I like and the best part is the color is temporary. I don’t have to be married to the thought of living without my gray strands that I love so much depending on what day it is.

One of the reasons I have decided against completely dyeing my hair is the time involved and cost of upkeep. I did consider using a henna hair dye as my sister did this and her hair looks great. No Gray is a great choice for those of you that choose to dye. The small size makes it easy to slide into your purse to cover your roots until you can make it to the salon. We all know how soon those pesky roots can pop up and this is a great option to extend your color and investment.

Being open to options turns making hard decisions on whether to dye or not to dye your hair a little bit easier to make. If you are uncertain about whether to dye permanently I would suggest trying out No Gray as a great temporary option. You may find that you like the option of rocking your glitter highlights one day and having those strands fall in solidarity with the rest of your hair the next. With this option water and shampoo is your fix for going back to natural.

Are you at odds on whether to dye your hair, or are you embracing your glitter highlights?!

goodwill furniture find

A table in our kitchen nook was pretty much non existent for a few months. The chairs on our 8 year old Walmart special gave out on us a few months ago and instead of rushing out to get something new, I was patient and spent time looking on Craisglist and in thrift stores for something unique. I knew I wanted something not so cookie cutter. I had also seen a great marble coffee table that was screaming at me to take it home, but that will be for another day when my bank account agreed with it!

On a trip to Pier 1 to pick up furniture for our outdoor space I came across a round glass table, very similar to what I envisioned for the space. I initially wanted it with dark wood but unfortunately since it was clearance I was going to take what they had or carry on with an empty breakfast nook. Seeing as how I was a little tired of explaining to people why we didn’t have a table in our kitchen I decided to get it. A friend of mine told me to get some antique furniture from somewhere like antiquesworld.co.uk, and as much as I do like antique furniture, I didn’t feel like it would fit in at our house at the moment.

Table was marked down from $250 to $100. Yes please.

Loaded the table up into my car and it has sat in our nook for nearly 3 months with no chairs…..until yesterday.

I went into the Goodwill to drop some things off and decided to take a peek around the place. Stopped dead in my tracks when I saw this set.

Goodwill thrifted furniture

The chairs were calling my name but I was ignoring the table that I didn’t need. I begged the manager to split the set for me.

Nope.

So I sat for nearly 20 minutes with the sold tag in my hand sniggling at all of the people coming in, stopping to look at it while I decided if I wanted to drop $70 for the set. After a few snaps and texts saying girl you better get that. I slid on over to the register.

They were mine and I couldn’t be happier. Noticed I said they, as in chairs cause the table is just a technicality. We’ll find something to do with it or sell it.

Goodwill

I have some big changes coming to the kitchen. I have scheduled myself to get out the paint brush and ladder and paint the walls white on June 29-30. Once the kitchen is white, I’ll make a decision on whether I am going to sand and re-stain the chairs or paint them.

goodwill

There is a fifth chair but for now it is hanging out in my son’s room until it is needed in the kitchen.

Yes, I know this will be the third time painting the kitchen. The first and second times I was just practicing. I think I have finally found the aesthetic I want so I am looking forward to moving forward with my dreams of a modern/traditional/transitional farmhouse kitchen. You’ll see.

In case you don’t see the beauty in these chairs, they are called Windsor chairs and looking at these gives me a strong desire to paint them black. We’ll see. I love buying new furniture, it’s so exciting! I’ve actually come across a site which sells recycled plastic furniture and Plastic wood. We do need some new fence panels for the garden so I’ll probably be buying off this website soon.

my trip to austin

The something or the other that states Mama ain’t no good to anybody if she hasn’t bothered to take care of herself gets all of the yasssssses that ever yassssssssed.

I’ve never considered myself the type of mother to have completely thrown herself into motherhood with reckless abandon. Yes, I am a mother but long before countless hours of lugging babies in utero for 80 weeks of my life and likely spending  90% of its remainder more concerned with their well being  than mine, my math says there is still 10% left to just be me.

I am me, and I am me often.

After burning at both ends for what seemed like an eternity but in reality was probably a few weeks, I decided I needed a break. On a whim, my 37th birthday gifted me a trip to Austin to visit one of the village Aunties.  I departed for Austin just a few days after  returning home from our family trip to Gatlinburg. In hindsight that wasn’t the best idea, but one thing is for sure by the time I got to Austin, ready for a trip away I was.

My thoughts on Austin prior to going? I was pretty sure it was the melting pot of all hipsters from what I had seen and read about Texas’ capital city. My assumptions were mostly true, however I was not prepared for the beauty of the landscape, the yumminess of the food and the laid back aura.

I freaking loved Austin.

Relocation has never been a desire of mine but if Austin presented an opportunity……

We did a few touristy things, brunched and sipped, ate and shopped. You know all of the things Mamas do when there aren’t people depending on them for a short snippet of time.

Let’s not forget our epic one day trip to Waco to visit Magnolia Market

One of my favorite spots in Austin was the Oasis. Who knew Austin had a huge lake, and mountains? I didn’t.

We strolled the streets stopping on a whim to visit quaint bars for cocktails, and ice cream food trucks for sweets, and ate pizza that was worth every second of the long ass wait. I promise it was reminiscent of our college days when we used to go to our call center job at Sprint dressed for the club.

This trip reminded me that wife and mother are just terms that label me but they will never define me. I still have lots of laughs, girl talks, and cocktails to sip…..sans kids
