dreaming of a white kitchen

Picking paint colors is about as stressful as buying a house. My kitchen has seen quite a few color changes and transformations in the three short years that we’ve been here.

About a year ago, I decided I wanted to go with a farmhouse look to my kitchen and shared my inspiration. After some time has passed, I think I am truly set in the design aesthetic I want for my house and I think it is a mix of farmhouse, traditional and whatever I see that I like.

For sometime, more specifically like a month after the initial paint job  I knew I wasn’t feeling the yellowish color. The addition of the accent wall was an attempt at salvaging the paint job but I still wasn’t sold. About three months ago, I decided I wanted an all white kitchen and one Saturday morning about a month ago I woke up and decided that day was the day. Headed to Ace, called up my little cousin to help and went to work.

You would think picking a white would be easy but it wasn’t. I wanted a pure white that wouldn’t be too cool or too warm. After taking a number of swatches outside to see how they showed in natural light I made a decision and it was the right one.

I couldn’t be happier with the decision. I absolutely love it, it blends well with my table and chairs and feel that I can move forward with adding in textiles, open shelving, new lighting and bar stools.

Open shelving is going on each side of this window

I’m wishing I would’ve painted the ugly fruit on that medallion above the light but the ceiling is getting planked so I decided to wait.

Next up is the open shelving. I hope to have them up in the next two weeks.

Amazing how your likes change over the years. What I once considered plain is now simplicity to me.I like simple more and more as the days go on.

Have a space in your house that needs a little paint transformation? Do tell!

Living

six years blogging

Do you know what today is?

Today marks the 6th year that I’ve been a blogger. In 2010 I hit send on my first ever blog post. Every year I do these posts and I feel as if I sound like a broken record. This is the first year that I can’t say its an actual blog anniversary due to the fact that I announced the  rebrand from Lipgloss and Binky to Unlikely Martha on this day 1 year ago.

I will say THANK YOU to all of you for taking the time out of your day to read, comment and connect with me. Some of you since 2010 some of you since yesterday but my appreciation for you is the same. I’ve looked back at some of my blog anniversary posts over the years and I am reminded why I overshare and document my life.

MEMORIES.

Seeing photos from 2011 and first day of schools makes me feel confident that I don’t see an end to blogging anytime soon. So you if you decide to journey back down memory lane with me just remember, my photography wasn’t too good back then, I’ve transferred platforms a few times so there are some missing photos etc. but the words are still there, and I have changed a lot in these past 6 years!!

Tazo Chai Tea
Food Living Recipes

morning devotion + chai tea + a cookie recipe

Starbucks and Unlikely Martha have teamed up to bring you this post. I’m a coffee drinker by nature, I’m trying out the tea life. Yes, I was compensated for this post.

This second week of school has been progressively better than last week when it comes to me not having to drag myself out of the bed in the morning and propping my eyelids open with toothpicks in the afternoon.

I’m in the process of confirming wholesalers, creating a marketing plan and deciding on inventory for my new online store that will go live on September 1 (more about that later) so my days have been rather long. Uneasiness started to creep in last week and I realized that I had gotten away from my devotional/quiet time in the morning that brought me so much peace throughout the day.

While I haven’t been much of a tea drinker outside of sweet tea, I’ve always had this thought that tea somehow had a calming and soothing factor that it’s cousin coffee does not. Starbucks was so kind to send me a few goodies that included tea, a fun mug and a recipe for Cinnamon Tea cookies. In preparation for my new weekly goal of getting up early for a little quiet time, I figured this was the perfect time to try out my gifts and make those cookies.

Tazo Chai Tea

Tazo Chai Tea

Sunday I whipped up the cookie recipe with the intent of dipping them in my Chai tea, and that is just what I did early Monday morning. At 4:50a  instead of hitting the snooze button, I rose with a purpose setting my day on a great trajectory by filling my thoughts with positive messages and images. I started with a warm cup of tea and probably one too many of those cookies but it was 5a. sooooo……….

Tazo Chai Tea

The cookies aren’t really the consistency of regular cookies but more like a biscuit, perfect for breakfast. Like really good.

Fall is coming, these cookies paired with Chai tea make the perfect snack for a book club meeting, or a cool evening spent chatting with a good friend. Or just eating, the options are endless and the cookies are delicious. Try them for yourself.

Carter’s Back to School Collection at Kohl’s

Thank you to Kohl’s and Carter’s for partnering with Unlikely Martha. I have received compensation for this post. All growing children need clothes, I’m happy to inform you about the  Kohl’s and Carters collaboration that will have your child on trend and your wallet intact.

Back to school preparation this year has gone rather smoothly. Instead of rushing out to purchase what I thought my children needed I employed strategy. This strategy consisted of really taking inventory of what they had and what they needed and creating an actual list based on these items.

I implore you to do something similar. It kept me on budget and sane. When purchasing clothing items I really tried to consider how I could repurpose those things for early fall by layering.

SHIRT | LEGGINGS

For Addison this consisted of finding prints that could be easily mixed and matched, purchasing lightweight shirts that could accommodate a thin long sleeve shirt underneath, and dresses that a jean jacket could be thrown over and leggings or tights put on underneath to extend seasonal wear.

The Carter’s collection at Kohl’s met all of my needs. My goal was to create a capsule wardrobe complete with leggings that could be mixed and matched creating a number of different outfits from just a few items.

With my little spirited girl having her own opinions on what to wear I thoroughly appreciate Carters ability to provide age appropriate on trend clothing that allows my Addison to don all of the sparkly and flowery things that she loves so much.
