Functional Fall Fashion

I’m a mom with very busy children, and while I love fashion it needs to be functional for what I am doing.

I’m known to have to sit for hours at a time waiting on ballet lessons or outside at baseball games not to mention all of the errands I try to sneak in where I can and the gym.

Functional fashion is important to me, this week I’m linking up with a fun series called “Moms Do Fall Fashion” to highlight some of our favorite fall fashion looks.

This is a look I will be consistently rocking in some variation or another because it makes sense for my lifestyle.

Since I’ve been trying to hit the gym at least 3 times a week, by Wednesday my hair is not at its best so a cute baseball cap is the way to hide that!

I can’t say it or scream it anymore but I am all about the classics. I’m pretty sure if you are fashion challenged a button down, jeans and jacket will make you look instantly put together.

I love a crossbody bag. I need my hands free to hold my phone and to also be forced not to carry my entire life with me wherever I go.

Carter’s Back to School Collection at Kohl’s

Thank you to Kohl’s and Carter’s for partnering with Unlikely Martha. I have received compensation for this post. All growing children need clothes, I’m happy to inform you about the  Kohl’s and Carters collaboration that will have your child on trend and your wallet intact.

Back to school preparation this year has gone rather smoothly. Instead of rushing out to purchase what I thought my children needed I employed strategy. This strategy consisted of really taking inventory of what they had and what they needed and creating an actual list based on these items.

I implore you to do something similar. It kept me on budget and sane. When purchasing clothing items I really tried to consider how I could repurpose those things for early fall by layering.

SHIRT | LEGGINGS

For Addison this consisted of finding prints that could be easily mixed and matched, purchasing lightweight shirts that could accommodate a thin long sleeve shirt underneath, and dresses that a jean jacket could be thrown over and leggings or tights put on underneath to extend seasonal wear.

The Carter’s collection at Kohl’s met all of my needs. My goal was to create a capsule wardrobe complete with leggings that could be mixed and matched creating a number of different outfits from just a few items.

With my little spirited girl having her own opinions on what to wear I thoroughly appreciate Carters ability to provide age appropriate on trend clothing that allows my Addison to don all of the sparkly and flowery things that she loves so much.

back to school with Shoe Carnival + $50 GC Giveaway

Thank you to Shoe Carnival for partnering with Unlikely Martha. With school on the horizon in just a few weeks this partnership is timely. I’ve been compensated for this post, my kids always needs shoes.

I’ve learned from years past the part of Summer where my kids are out of school moves extremely fast once July comes. Father time has once again pushed the speed up button and on August 1 my babies, equipped with their backpacks, lunchboxes, new school clothes and shoes will be walking back into the schoolhouse for another year of learning.  Back to school shopping is underway and you know it is always best to get the things you dread out of the way first.  Shoe shopping has already been tackled and to be honest Shoe Carnival had mercy on our budget.

As you can imagine, I’m a little flustered trying to get everything in order to include cleaning out closets and drawers taking inventory of what fits and what’s flooding so that I spend wisely when purchasing new school gear. Shoes are always at the height of the back to school priority list, and are the items that I dread shopping for hands down. Outfitting two kids with shoes that are affordable and durable stresses me out.  The sheer cost of purchasing multiple pairs of shoes for more than one child is mind-blowing, especially since my son has moved out of children’s sizes into adult.

Shoe Carnival came through with discounts that allowed me to get FOUR pair of shoes for about $150. Who doesn’t love saving money? I’ll wait.

In addition, Addison spun the discount wheel and got her Mama an additional $4 off our total purchase. Thanks boo!

Ironically both children opted for the classic Chuck Taylor’s.

One of Addi’s best friends came over a few weeks ago with high top Chuck Taylor’s and she had been asking for a pair ever since. She spotted a pair she wanted and within minutes had them tried on and in the buy pile.

I added on these double tongue Chuck Taylor’s because I loved them. I just hope they stay white until at least September, or maybe she’ll only wear them on rainy days with no chance of outside play.

My son, has become a little high maintenance. I can no longer say this is what you are getting without some kind of kickback. He finally decided on these high top white leather Chuck Taylor’s

…and with a little coercion he agreed to a low top Gray Converse. Glad to say I can wear both pair, thanks son for taking one for the team.

Zara Maxi Dress
Fashion Mama Style

my new favorite dress

This heat lately. Y’all know I love my plants and lets just say they’ve all burned up, so the sun and I aren’t on particularly good terms right now.

I’m so thankful for the ability to avoid the outdoors at all costs and I have been practicing my right to stay inside during the hottest parts of the day cause, in the words of my husband, ” It’s hot out that doe.”

Zara Maxi Dress

My fashion jam right now are dresses in the shift and maxi variety. I don’t want to look all made up and slay daily, I just want to put a dress over my head, put on a necklace and some shoes and keep it moving.

Zara Maxi Dress

Looking put together is intentional and as simple as a dress, a necklace, and some shoes. That’s it.

Last summer my Gap dress came through. I wore the you know what out of that dress and it has been placed in the dresser with the rest of the well loved clothing items that have reduced themselves to house wear.

Needed a new one.

Zara Maxi Dress

This $22.90 special at Zara is my new love. Light, flowy and everything that is put on and go. I got this in Austin, and have been meaning to get downtown and pick it up in all of the colors.

But again, HEAT.  So I’ll just keep washing and wearing this one. Last night trying to eat and drive I spilled polynesian sauce all down the front of it. I hope it comes out.

The wine I spilled on it here came out. Fingers crossed. You have to follow me on Snapchat at UnlikelyMartha to get all of the good stuff as it goes down.

What’s your go style in the heat?
