In True Legging Fashion

I work at home, which equates to I don’t get out much and when I do get out most often its for things like running errands and chauffeuring kids around. I was never into the yoga pant thing but leggings? I love what I call legging fashion.

I live in leggings and I have no problem dressing them up, or down and turning them into whatever I need them to be. They are comfortable and in the right blend they work, like these I got from Banana Republic. All the stretch and softness that makes me comfortable and somewhat stylish.

Add a little flair to your leggings if you like. Throw on an oversized sweater and belt it, toss on an oxford and a jean jacket, I tend to think there are no rules in making leggings work except they must be OPAQUE, meaning we shouldn’t see your panties through them. I almost think that should go without saying but alas I’ve seen some infractions in this area.

I do always try to make sure something is covering my hiny because I’m not comfortable just having it all out there but each to his own when it comes to showing off the assets or lack there of in my case.

The Fundamentals of Building a High | Low Wardrobe

There is nothing like entering  the last year of your 30s to get you thinking about responsible spending, investments and retirement goals. I’m there. There are few frivolous dollars that I part with  that aren’t scrutinized for necessity over desire.  I’ve always employed the high | low wardrobe method and over the years I have come to appreciate a good deal.

As we peruse the internet and Instagram it is so easy to compare what we don’t have or feel some kind of way about not being able to afford that bag or those shoes. I mean, I can’t be the only one who has clicked one of those affiliate links ready to buy and that basic item  was like $500.

I can never stress enough that good style doesn’t have to cost a fortune, if you are down for  a good romp with the sale rack, and the thrift or consignment store looking put together can be very affordable. Let’s never forget that time is money and searching for a deal takes time so sometimes you have to take that into consideration when bargain hunting.

When it comes to building a High | Low wardrobe here are a few tips and tricks to consider:

  • The low in High | Low should never be confused with low quality. I’ve come across a $20 shirt in a trendy store and a marked down $75 shirt for $20. Fabric quality matters. I love my trendy items but I refuse to spend more than $20 on them because they will be marked down to nothing at the end of the season and won’t hold up long enough to help  build a sustainable wardrobe.

  • Splurge on the basics. I will spend money for a good oxford, blazer or classic shoes. These are the things that build wardrobes.

  • Don’t be afraid of thrift and consignment stores. Also peruse online sites where people resell their high quality goods. I’ll admit they can be intimidating at first. However, once you find your steal of a deal you’ll be hooked. It’s a thrill like no other.

  • No matter how cheap it is if you are unsure leave it. It’s wasted money that could be put toward something you really want or need.

  • Make a list of what you need and search for those items first. If you do it the other way around you will have a closet full of things you don’t need.

  • Pick a neutral palette….or not. If you notice my wardrobe is very void of color, this jacket was a push, but at $5 I didn’t care. I wear lots of black white and gray so building an interchangeable wardrobe comes easy for me. If I loved color I would keep my basics neutral and bring in pops of color elsewhere while building up my basics.

Are you down for the discount hunt or would rather pay full price and be done with it?

thrifted jewelry finds

Thrifting over the years has been good to me. I’ve lucked up on some gems especially in the jewelry department. If you are looking for unique and cheap pieces now is the time to start snooping around your local area thrift stores.

The all familiar purge and declutter movement is kicking up steam all across the country as we prepare to leave what we don’t want in 2017. Somebody else’s junk will overwhelmingly become somebody else’s treasure as thrift and consignment stores abound with purged finds.

I know some people are averse to thrifting and that’s fine, I’m not and if you aren’t either jewelry pieces are great to thrift. The years have been good to me and I’ve collected some pieces that are unique and might I add cheap.

I don’t have sensitive skin so after a good wipe down with alcohol I’m good to go. As far as caring for high end costume jewelry,  I don’t coat anything with clear polish but I do take care not to expose the items to water.

If you are looking for cheap ways to dress up your outfits, and you love a good treasure hunt be sure to hit up your local thrift stores. When you find something good make sure you tag me on Instagram so I can see!

In a few weeks I’ll be doing an epic thrift store tour of Atlanta so stay tuned!

In the meantime, here are a few of my favorite thrifted jewelry finds, some of these stay on repeat like my favorite thrifted necklaces here and here.

Thrifted Mixed Prints

I can’t wait for the day when my Sundays become free again so I can peruse the aisles of my local thrift and consignment shops. Thrifting is soothing for me and I have gotten away from it in the last year or so but seeing as how I purged and never replaced many of my staples I might want to get back on that bandwagon.

Thrifting for me is like that thing you do and then you stop doing it, and then you stumble back on it again and can’t remember why you ever stopped. Last weekend’s brief trip to the thrift store made me fall in love all over again. Something about this new dust allergy that I’ve developed in my  late thirties is likely to have me carrying a dust mask  but I shall not be stopped on my quest for a one of a kind cheap find.

Any other thrifters in the house might be able to relate to folks telling you how cute an item is and when you casually mention you picked it up from a thrift store their response is followed with a “I could never wear someone else’s clothes, or thrifting isn’t for me.” My response is usually in the tune of:

“Great, that’s why you don’t have to. Do as you like. Everything ain’t for everybody. Thanks for letting me know so I don’t invite you to go with me.”

Last weekend I picked up this orange and white checkered trench coat. I was on the fence about it, even did a Instagram Stories poll and the general consensus was get the jacket. I am happy to add this number to my growing trench coat collection. It was the only item I picked up, and it was $4. I’ve long moved away from just buying things. I want timeless pieces only, not a closet full of things I won’t wear as I rebuild my wardrobe piece by piece.

I thrifted this blouse many years ago. Leopard print is a neutral if you ask me.

Let’s get into the costume, and gaudy jewelry that finds its way into thrift store glass cabinets. I’m a fan. I shared some of my favorites that I’ve collected over the years HERE.

….and certainly if I’m here for used clothes, I’m all the way present for used books. I love stumbling on these little free libraries. I promise you it’s the little things….
