life updates | Disney. Boule. Back to School Edition

Every Summer I have lofty goals of continuing to update our Summer happenings here on a weekly basis and every year for the past 4 or 5 years I’ve consistently failed.

Between all of the madness in the world with these senseless killings, my rightful worries about the safety of my young son in this cruel world coupled with maintaining a business, traveling, attending a conference and just plain out keeping house and kids, this Summer has worn me slap out.

S L A P.

Two weeks from today, August 1 to be exact my children will board the school bus and my normal routine will resume as the wheels of the bus roll them right on to the school house.

So that means the next few weeks will be full of house purging, school shopping, meal planning, organizing and getting them back onto a sleep schedule.

Finish line, is that you? *hand over eyes, squinting into the future*

We have some catching up to do mostly regarding our trip to all of the Disney parks. I promise a detailed post of every park complete with pictures in the next week or so.

Just a little over a week after returning from Orlando, I spent a week downtown for the Historic 67th Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Boule.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.

The Boule is a biennial gathering of all members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. throughout the world. This year the event was hosted in Atlanta with nearly 22,000 members in attendance. To maintain my sanity and limit parking costs I opted to share an Air BnB with some of my sorority sisters downtown. It kind of felt like a staycation.

After learning about all of the amazing things the organization has in store for addressing more current issues plaguing African American communities as well as what has been done for communities across the world to include donating nearly 500K bookbags to students in need, 40K dresses for girls in Africa and being on target to restore more than 1,908 playgrounds in under served communities, I am feeling ready to get back to work after our Summer hiatus is over in a few weeks.

In the meantime I enjoyed the week of sisterhood, service and fun.

That’s what I’ve been doing. You do know the ‘Gram, and Snapchat mostly catch my daily moves when I feel like being bothered. Give me a follow. I’m UnlikelyMartha on both

How has your Summer been? Any fun trips or updates to tell me about?

Show Your Disney Side Party

Happy Monday!

Hope your weekend was well. Can you believe we are headed into the last week of February? Time is surely waiting on no one.

This weekend we hosted a Disney Side party at our house and Addison was in complete “Turn Up” mode!  Although she knew it wasn’t her birthday you would’ve thought it was by the way she was acting.

We hosted about 12 children and their fab moms at our home for an afternoon of fun and all things Disney.

It just so happens that a few of our guests will be visiting Disney this summer including us so we headed to the basement to watch the Disney vacation planning video. Unfortunately the adults couldn’t hear because the children were screaming in excitement at the Disney characters on the video.Disney Side

After they were done with the movie they headed back upstairs for more playing and fun….and cupcakes.

What an awesome time celebrating with friends and learning more about Disney and what it has to offer. I am hype about our trip to Disney this year. I’ll have to go back and watch the video to make sure I get some tips. I’ll be sure to share them with you.

Anybody else headed to see Mickey Mouse this year?! Did you have cupcakes this weekend?! How was your weekend?

Painting with Disney and Glidden Part III

This is the finale that you have been waiting for and to be honest it is less than stellar due to the fact that we are likely to be moving very soon.

As mentioned in Part I and Part II we set about to make a few changes to Addison’s room utilizing Disney’s new line of paint with Glidden. Not knowing when our time to move will come the majority of her room has been packed up, however I still managed to get the paint on the walls and finish up the glow in the dark stencil design.

We had a nice get together with a few of her friends from the neighborhood to show off the changes but they were more enamored with the toys and snacks seeing that it is virtually impossible to see the design on the wall unless it is dark in the room. We have one of those circular windows above the regular window that doesn’t have a shade so even with the curtain closed it still wasn’t dark enough to reveal the design. I tried my best to point it out to to them but the girls were more enamored with the fairies on the bedspread and well the little gentleman was more into the toys. So I didn’t push it, I let them snack and play. Fortunate for them one of their moms won a gift card to Walmart, hopefully they got something out of the deal.

After my last mishap with the stencil, I was careful to take my time this go round and carefully dab the paint onto the stencil and unfortunately I was not able to capture a great picture of it to show off my handiwork but I will say I was very proud of the outcome. This is the absolute best picture I could capture and I had to use my tripod to capture this.

I promise the outcome is much better than this in real life. Upon my initial completion of the design Addison was afraid of the design and then she slowly came around when I told her it was a princess crown. Needless to say she still refuses to sleep in there alone *sigh*

Overall I was thoroughly impressed with the line of paint, especially the coverage.  I have already had to wipe stains off of the wall and they came off with no problem. With no scent and low VOC’s this brand is a no brainer if you are looking to upgrade your child’s room. You aren’t left to the design process by your lonesome, there are awesome resources available to help you come up with and execute a master plan when it comes to redesigning your child’s room.

My project is on the low end of the totem pole when compared to what some of the other moms did. Make sure to check out the Disney Paint Mom Pinterest Board and Facebook page to see the other projects.
